Born in Monessen, Soto was sent to Chios, Greece to be raised by his paternal grandparents. He graduated from the school of Kambos with a degree in accounting. Soon after graduating he was able to return to the US and reunite with his family. Unfortunately the war in Korea soon led to his enlistment. Soto was shipped to Korea as part of the Company B 5th Cavalry Regiment. He became a Sergeant 1st Class during his tour of duty and was awarded 3 bronze stars. After his military service was complete, Soto returned again to Monessen where he worked in his father’s restaurants The Victory and Ela Mesa. Soto also worked at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel in the Wire Mill and in the Safety Department for 36 years. Soto most enjoyed being a gateman and EMT for the mill. It is at this time also when Soto became involved with the St. Spyridon G.O. community. Soto has been past president of his church, on numerous committees through the years for its buildings and renovations, along with being chairman of the past food festivals held there. He was a member of the G.A.P.A. club, The Chian Society, where he held the position of secretary for 40 years, and The AHEPA Lodge #116 serving in different chairs there. Soto was also a member of American Legion’s Monessen Post #28 for over 60 years. Soto also was a Master Mason at the Tri County Masonic Lodge #252, as well as a Syria Shriner, of the Oasis of Cheswick, Desert of Pennsylvania. Soto was accomplished at cooking and was known throughout the community as having this talent. He also enjoyed his time outdoors whether it was hunting small game with his family and friends or taking his children to Sunday picnics in the Laurel Mountains. Soto always enjoyed the weekly card games that were held with his neighbors. A kind and gentle soul is how his wife and children will always remember him.
