Nicholas Cullen, Sr. of Monessen passed at the age of 95 on January 2, 2013 at the Hallsworth House in Monessen. He was born in Monessen on December 21, 1917, the last surviving child of Valentine Cullen Sr. and Barbara Duletin Cullen. He was a lifelong resident of Monessen, retiring after 42 years of service with Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company. Mr. Cullen was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and public servant. His passions were gardening, bowling, and watching the Boston Red Sox. Mr. Cullen was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Anna Niksich Cullen. Surviving relatives include four children, ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Children include Nicholas Cullen Jr. and wife Arlene Eroshevich Cullen of Upper St. Clair; Cheryl Cullen Dickinson and husband Roger Dickinson of Litchfield, CT; Thomas Cullen and wife Karen Boyer Cullen of Elizabeth; and William Cullen and wife Christine Kolakowski Cullen of Penn Hills.
Nick served his country during WW II in the US Army Air Corps and dedicated over 40 years of service to his hometown of Monessen. Being a dedicated school director for 36 years, Nick served numerous terms as President and as Finance Chairman for over 20 years on the Monessen School Board. He was a co-founder of Little League Baseball in Monessen and coached youth baseball in Monessen for over 40 years.
Friends will be received on Sunday, January 6 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Robert Billick Funeral Home Inc. and cremation services, 1415 Marion Avenue, Monessen www.billicksfuneralhome.com. A blessing service will be held on Monday, January 7 at 9:30 AM in the funeral home followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass in the Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, 618 Knox Avenue, Monessen with internment directly following at the Grandview Cemetery in Monessen. In lieu of flowers donations are asked to be made to Gateway Hospice or Mon-Vale Health Resources in care of the funeral home.
